The Success that was APT Macau 2010

The Asian Poker Tour, in collaboration with City of Dreams, successfully held the nine-day festival of live poker action at the Hard Rock Poker Lounge as the Asian Poker Tour Macau 2010 happened last November 6-14.

Poker players were fleet in joining the exciting side events that the Asian Poker Tour prepared for them. The tournament area was filled with poker enthusiasts especially during the APT Macau Celebrity Charity Challenge where model and actress Grace Huang won MOP100,000 for Caritas Macau. Equally well-attended was the APT’s All In Battle of the Nations event won by Team Malaysia (Charles Chua, Daniel Chee and K.C Lee).

China’s Zhang Dan Peng emerged victorious as he outlasted a field of poker pros and legends–the likes of Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey–and grabbed the Asian Poker Tour Macau 2010 Champion title earning him HK$1.678 (which is approximately USD$215,000). Peng went heads up against Germany’s Bjoern Wiesler with his Ace-Deuce beating the opponent’s Pocket Sevens. It is pretty impressive to note that the 18-year old champ is the only Chinese winner of the APT Macau Main Event—which also happens to be the first-ever poker tournament he participated in. Details on Peng’s victory can be seen here.

Was Zhang Dan Peng your bet? If not, who was? Let us know of your thoughts!

Zhang is the first-ever Chinese champion of the APT Macau Main Event, held at the integrated entertainment complex, the City of Dreams.

Zhang, who only began playing poker six months ago, qualified for the 161-player Main Event in one of the APT Macau’s satellite events. Zhang steadily worked his way through the Main Event to land himself in a heads-up battle against Germany’s Bjoern Wiesler in Sunday’s Final Table. In the very first hand, Zhang went all- in, with his Ace-Deuce beating the 34-year old’s Pocket Sevens. As the runner-up, Wiesler will take home HKD$920,000 (approximately USD$117,000).

Huge HK Contingent Expected to Play in Macau

In 2009, three players from Hong Kong made it to the Final Table of the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Macau Main Event—this year, the APT expects a boom in the number of players from the said country.

A total of 22 players came all the way from Hong Kong to participate in last year’s APT Macau—five of which made it into the money, winning HK$1,781,000 in sum.

The three Hong Kong-based players who competed for the APT Macau Main Event Champion title in the Final Table (placing 4th, 5th, and 6th) were: David Steicke, Chris Chau, and Michael Woo.

In 2009, David Steicke ended up at 4th place-- the best finish for a player from Hong Kong.

This year, due to Poker’s unstoppable growth in popularity, the number of players from Hong Kong is predicted to increase significantly. Also, the APT’s addition of another Day 1 in the tournament and the scheduling of the APT Macau 2010 Ladies of Poker Event on the 7th of November (Sunday) at 4pm are expected to attract even more participants.

The Ladies Take Center Stage in the APT

The beginning of the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Macau tournament week—the 7th of November—is looking more interesting as the APT introduced an additional Day 1 for players and scheduled the very popular Ladies of Poker Event.

With the success that the previous APT tournaments enjoyed and the overwhelming response they got from poker players and enthusiasts alike, the APT has made some tweaks with its schedule so as to give those with heavy work commitments the opportunity to participate in the much anticipated APT Macau Main Event—hence, the addition of another Day 1 especially for the players.

The ladies in action during the APT Philippines 2010 Ladies of Poker event

In a special event they can call their own, the women gets a chance to show off their poker prowess in a side event of the APT. For the 3rd leg in a row, the APT is offering the Ladies of Poker Event as part of the multiple side events happening in the APT Macau 2010 on November 6 to 14 next month at the Hard Rock Hotel Casino and Poker Lounge in the City of Dreams, Macau.
While there are other interesting side events like the Battle of the Nations, Greed and High Rollers events among many others, the Ladies of Poker event is exclusively for the women of the felt. The buy-in is set at HK$900+HK$100; but aside from the cash prize, surely, the ladies would want to go home as the APT queen in this leg of the tour.

The APT Macau 2010 Ladies of Poker Event is scheduled to happen on November 07 (Sunday) starting at 4PM. Last year, Ms. Aura Asilo won the APT Macau 2009 Ladies Ambassadors Event title. Earlier this year, Ms. Ghie Rivera bested a 31-woman field to take home APT Philippines 2010 Ladies of Poker trophy.

MACAU – Monday, September 13, 2010: City of Dreams, in collaboration with APT to host The Asian Poker Tour in Macau from Saturday to Sunday, November 6 to 14, 2010. The last leg of the Asian Poker Tour for 2010 and one of the biggest events in Asian poker is set to rock Macau for nine days offering a jam-packed schedule of poker events and tournaments at City of Dreams, an integrated entertainment resort that is the newest “must experience” destination in Macau.

The festival of poker including a main event with a buy-in of HK$32,500 + HK$2,500 (approximately US$4,180 + US$320), will be staged for the first time at City of Dreams, collaborator for the event. APT Chief Executive Officer Mr. Jeff Mann said he is looking forward for the success of the much-awaited event and working with City of Dreams: “We are delighted that APT Macau has a new home and in particular a new and enthusiastic collaborator: Especially Hard Rock Poker Lounge, boasts full integrated bar and lounge facilities and is perfect for private parties and special events in Macau will add a new edge to the APT Macau event. Michael Cua is the Champion of APT Philippines 2010!

Congratulations to Michael Cua for winning the APT Philippines 2010 main event!

The local player outlasted a field of 226 players from different countries around the world, including top pros such as Johnny Chan, J.C. Tran, Nam Le, and Bryan Huang, as well as defending champion Neil Arce, to win the coveted title. Cua, who won his seat to the main event through one of the RWM Satellite Series tournaments held in the weeks leading up to the main event, took home a big prize of US $172,200 and a seat to the APT Macau 2010 main event worth US $4,500.

It was an amazing run for Cua, who was one of the shortest stacks late in Day 3. With his chips hovering at less than 14,000, Cua was able to get a series of double-ups to keep himself in contention and eventually found himself as a short stack, yet again, at the final table.

Keeping a low profile but getting in some timely wins, Michael eventually landed in the final three, where he surprised everybody by tripling up and then eliminating Huang in third place a few hands later. He then made quick work of runner-up Mike Puno, wearing down the former chip leader’s stack with aggressive moves until the two finally got their stacks all-in.

On a board of 10-Clubs, 6-Spades, K-Clubs, and 4-Hearts, Puno checked over to Cua, who bet out 50,000. Puno then retaliated by going all-in with J-Clubs and 3-Clubs. Cua made the call, showing 10-Hearts and 9-Spades. With one card to go, Puno was looking for another club or a jack, but the river did not provide either as the 9-Diamonds came, sealing the win for Cua.

The next APT main event will be held in Asia’s gaming capital. APT Macau 2010 will be held from November 6 to 14 at City of Dreams, with buy-in set at HK $32,500 + HK $2,500.

“Lloyd will be implementing some great new changes this August. Playing days will be shorter this time around to make it better for the players, with an extra day added to the schedule. Starting stacks are now deeper, too, as players will be getting 15,000 in chips to start.”

One of the most sought after tournament directors in Asia, Lloyd is fresh off another year in Las Vegas as a member of the tournament management team of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). He has worked with the APT in the past, having served as the Tour’s poker specialist in 2009.

A familiar face on the Philippine poker scene, Mr. Fontillas is the founder and tournament director of The Poker Circuit, a series of poker events that are held in different venues throughout the country.

In addition, Mr. Fontillas has worked with the World Poker Tour (WPT) and the Poker King Club in Macau.

He has considerable experience in the field of tournament directing, having trained under and worked with renowned directors such as Matt Savage of the WPT, Jack Effel of the WSOP, and Sam Quinto of Commerce Casino.

APT Philippines 2010 will be held from August 23 to 29 at the Resorts World Manila complex in Manila, Philippines. Buy-in is set at approximately US $2,500 + US $200.

Top Pros Such as J.C Tran and Nam Le Already Anticipating APT Philippines 2010

With APT Philippines 2010 around a month away, top poker pros around the world such as J.C. Tran and Nam Le have already marked August 23 to 29 on their calendars – and you should, too!

Two of the world’s top players of Asian descent, J.C. and Nam will be bringing their A-game to Resorts World Manila to try and become the next APT champion. They’ll have some tough competition, though, as defending APT Philippines champion Neil Arce and plenty of the region’s top poker players will also be there to capture the coveted crown.

A Vietnamese-American living in Sacramento, J.C. Tran is currently one of the most consistently successful players on the world poker circuit. After starting out by playing in local card rooms, he has become well-respected throughout the poker world.

Tran’s many accomplishments include winning the $1,500 No Limit Hold ‘Em event at the 39th World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, winning the $75,000 Party Poker.com Premier League III in London, as well as being named the World Poker Tour Season 6 Player of the Year. His latest accomplishment, winning the $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha event at the 40th World Series of Poker, earned him his second career bracelet.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese-American poker pro Nam Le is considered by many to be a major threat at live tournaments. With his cool-as-ice demeanor on the felt, it’s no surprise that Nam has over $6,000,000 in career earnings.

Undaunted even by the most pressure-packed of situations, Le’s patient and methodical approach to poker has allowed him to cash in a lot of tournaments, the biggest coming in the 2006 World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star event. By outlasting 500 players, Nam took down the first-place prize of more than $1.1 million.

APT Philippines 2010 will be held from August 23 to 29 at the Resorts World Manila complex in Manila, Philippines. Buy-in is set at approximately US $2,500 + US $200.

Aside from the main event, there will be eight exciting side events at APT Philippines 2010, including a high-rollers tournament, a Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, and the APT’s very own Greed tournament.

Neil Arce to Defend Title at APT Philippines 2010

The Asian Poker Tour is proud to announce that APT Philippines defending champion Neil Arce will be back to defend his title at this year’s event in Manila.

Arce will be looking to become the first back-to-back APT champion as he confirmed his attendance at this year’s APT Philippines 2010 main event.

Considered one of the best poker players in the Philippines, Arce defeated a field of 262 of the top players from the country and around the world to win the APT Philippines 2009 main event.

His skill helped him build his stack throughout the tournament and good fortune would help him finish off runner-up Steve Yea. After a raise and re-raise, Arce got his money all-in with king-queen but was in trouble as Yea tabled ace-king. Fate would be on Arce’s side, though, as he spiked a queen on the turn to win the US $185,000 first prize and the title of APT Philippines champion.

The victory was a big boost to poker in the country as Arce became the first local player to win an international poker tournament on Philippine soil.

An accomplished player in both the tournament and cash game arena, the PokerStars-sponsored Arce is also a former Filipino Poker Tour (FPT) champion and placed third in the high-rollers event at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau in 2009.

First Venue of The Poker Circuit’s Motherboard Series Announced

The Poker Circuit (TPC) has announced that the first venue to sign on for its innovative TPC Motherboard is Poker Royale Sports Club.

The TPC Motherboard is a tournament series that will act as a pre-event for APT Philippines 2010, which will be staged at Resorts World Manila from 23rd-29th August 2010.

The series’ unique format will give local players the opportunity to win seats into the APT Philippines Main Event – one of the region’s top international poker tournaments this year.

Independent poker rooms from around the country will run their own legs of the TPC Motherboard during July and August with the finalists from each event coming together for a final play-off tournament to be staged on the opening day of APT Philippines.

Located on Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City, Poker Royale’s TPC Motherboard leg will be from August 6-9 2010 (3 starting days and a Day 2). The event will have a P1M guarantee prize pool that includes 18seats into the TPC Motherboard final event.

“Being a newly-opened poker room, we’re really excited to be announcing our first major tournament,” said Poker Royale’s Charles Koo. “Also, the APT is involved, so it is a very significant event.”

For more information about the TPC Motherboard, click here.

About the TPC Motherboard: The basic premise of the TPC Motherboard is that it will start with one tournament at Php 1,000,000 guaranteed. The guaranteed prize pool will then increase as more poker clubs join in. The whole master plan is to have multiple venues all over the Philippines, playing with the same mechanics and same buy-in of PhP 5,000 + 400, contributing to a multimillion peso prize pool.

For every Php 500,000 guaranteed by a poker room, nine players will be in the money and will qualify for the TPC Motherboard Finale on the opening day of APT Philippines 2010. For example, if five poker rooms were to contribute Php 1,000,000 each (creating a total guarantee of Php 5,000,000), a total of 90 players would be in the money and advance to the Finale.

The TPC Motherboard Finale will take place on August 23, the first day of APT Philippines 2010, at Resorts World Manila. Every player in the Finale is guaranteed a cash prize, with the top players winning seats to the APT Philippines 2010 main event.

Congratulations to Freddie Journeaux, who won the The Poker Circuit: Wild ‘N Wet tournament!

A Scottish player who now considers the Philippines as his home, Freddie used a patient and intelligent strategy to pick his spots all throughout the tournament. In the end, he found himself heads-up against local player Oplong Sinapilo.

With Sinapilo already running low on chips, the Filipino finally decided to make a stand and moved all-in with 10s 8c. Journeaux obliged and called his shove, tabling As 3s. He immediately hit on the flop as it came Ah 4c Ks. The Kh on the turn sealed the deal for Journeaux, crowning him as the champion of Wild ‘N Wet.

For the win, Journeaux won Php 137,700 in cash and a Php 11,000 seat to the upcoming Filipino Poker Tour (FPT) five million peso guaranteed event in June. Meanwhile, Sinapilo went home with Php 76,000 in cash as well as a seat to the upcoming FPT event.
