The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival Publishes Full Schedule
Last year’s six day event has doubled in size and will be transformed into a record breaking 12 day extravaganza, creating Asia’s first festival of poker. The success of the Asian Poker Tour sponsored poker room at the Starworld Hotel and Casino has led organizers to lay out these ambitious plans that represent another huge leap forward for poker in the region. The Asian Poker Tour Macau will also be the backdrop to the filming of the first Chinese language poker film, ‘Poker King,’ starring A-list Chinese actors, actresses and pop stars. With such a high profile film being made, many believe it could have the same impact on the Asian region as 1998 Hollywood movie Rounders did on aspiring poker players in the western world.
The Asian Poker Tour Macau hosts over 21 events with 15 official side events - the first five taking place between the 12th – 16th August featuring guaranteed prize pools. These are the HK$2,500 welcome event that guarantees HK$100,000, an Asian Poker Tour Open re-buy and add-on event with a $1,150 entry fee that guarantees HK$50,000, a Greed event that costs HK$2,500 to enter but offers the chance for one player to scoop all the HK$100,000 guaranteed prize pool if they choose, and the Hong Kong Game Club HK$1,150 re-buy and add-on tournament that guarantees HK$150,000. This will be followed by a second HK$1,150 re-buy and add-on tournament and much more, all ahead of Day 1A of the Main Event which kicks off on the 20th August.
In addition, there will be other head-hunter, six-handed, eight-handed, invitational, and celebrity tournaments. There will also be a ladies’ tournament and heads-up event, both believed to be firsts for the region and an example of just how far the game has moved on in Asia in the last twelve months. Taking part in the head-hunter tournaments will be ‘The Poker Pack’, the top professionals who are ambassadors of the Asian Poker Tour on the world circuit, as well as other famous names such as Johnny Chan. The Poker Pack, who will also have prominent roles in the ‘Poker King’ movie, are made up of the awesome poker abilities of JC Tran, Nam Le, Steve Sung, David ‘Chino’ Rheem, Quinn Do and Kwang Soo Lee.
The comprehensive side event schedule also includes a HK$164,000 buy-in high rollers event with other side events having a buy-in as little as HK$1,000. Another highlight includes the ‘Battle of the Nations’ team event. This is a team No Limit Hold’em tournament featuring teams of three members from the same country. There will be two teams facing each other at each table, so the tables will be six-handed. The goal is to eliminate all the members of the other team. This will play down until there is one team left! Sponsors of the side events and marketing collaterals include the Hong Kong Game Club, DafaPoker, Dafa888, the Poker King Movie, JBET, PartyPoker, Bwin, 777baby Casino, Zipang Casino, and PKR.
The cards are in the air for the first of two day one’s of the Main Event on the 20th August, with the final table scheduled on the 23rd of August.
Matt Savage, the world’s leading Tournament Director overseeing the action said: “This is an ambitious tournament schedule and there is something for everybody within it, there’s no doubt it is player friendly. Macau’s poker scene is booming and some of the formats will certainly be firsts for the region. The guarantees are great and it is exciting to see the heads-up and ladies event on the schedule. What shouldn’t be forgotten as well though is that The Asian Poker Tour hosts the most legendary parties – the one in Macau even won awards last year!”
Chris Parker, CEO of the Asian Poker Tour said: “We’re delighted with this schedule - it really shows just how far the game has come in this part of the world. Our objective was to put player’s interests first in all scheduling as Macau will be a poker heaven in August!”
Amongst the online networks already committed to sending players are the Ongame Network, the iPoker Network and PartyPoker. In addition, online rooms Bwin, PKR, DafaPoker, JBET Poker, 888.com, Titan Poker, RedKings, Chilipoker, and 32Red are in on the action guaranteeing a significant online qualifier contingent. Last year, the event attracted some of the most famous names in the game including Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, Johnny Chan, John Juanda, Huck Seed, Liz Lieu, Todd Brunson, Kenny Tran and ‘The Poker Pack.’ The 2008 Asian Poker Tour Macau Main Event was won by then 20-year-old US hotshot Yevgeniy Timoshenko, who scooped US$500,000 after emerging triumphant from the star-studded field that featured players from over 40 countries. Timoshenko has since gone on to win the WPT Championship and is currently one of the hottest prospects in the game.
The buy-in for the Main Event is set at HK$34,400, while high-limit games and sit-n-go tables will run throughout the duration of the festival. As well as the action on the felt, the play off the felt promises to be extremely lively too with The Asian Poker Tour looking to top the legendary and award winning party held in Macau last year. It’s Clear: Poker is Taking a Hold in Asia
For those who have not been to Macau, the town is Baccarat City: of its gross gaming revenue, 87.6 percent is derived from baccarat alone! Bottom line: Asians, and in particular the Chinese, love card games and have been playing them for centuries. History books detail that the Chinese emperor Mu-Tsung played ‘domino cards’ with his wife on New Year’s Eve in 969 AD. Poker is simply returning home to its original roots after several centuries, having travelled around the world undergoing multiple modifications along the way.
While many people still say that Las Vegas is the world’s gambling mecca, a closer look at the facts shows otherwise. In 2006, Macau overtook Las Vegas in terms of gambling revenue. In the first half of 2008, Macau’s casinos reported $7.4 billion in gross revenues, which is substantially more than the $6 billion revenues reported by the entire state of Nevada for the same period! Also, a gaming table in Macau reportedly turns over seven times more revenue than one in Las Vegas!
Fifteen months ago you could not find a single poker table anywhere in Macau. Today, that number stands at more than 50 tables spread between three casino operators – Lisboa, the Galaxy StarWorld, and the Wynn Hotel and Casino.
What is exciting is that traditional baccarat players in Macau are being drawn to poker. They want to learn the game and they want to excel. This was recently witnessed at the Asian Poker Tour/StarWorld Hotel Poker Room and at the Wynn’s poker tables.
These venues, the main operators of poker in Macau, offer players two distinct choices in terms of playing ambiance. The Asian Poker Tour’s poker room is a dedicated, up-market playing area with a private club atmosphere whereas the Wynn places its poker tables within its main casino gaming floor, offering the vibrant buzz of an active casino as you play.
However, both venues offer a cosmopolitan array of players of varying degrees of proficiency – at the tables were overseas Chinese from Canada, US and London; players from China and Hong Kong as well as Singaporeans, Malaysians, Vietnamese as well as American and European players. There were some good players who knew what they were doing and some who were literally learning the game.
The common element in both venues, though, was that the rail was packed with observers – mainly from mainland China and Hong Kong – obviously keen on learning the game.
Both online and land-based poker operators have definitely noticed the growth potential of Asia and all the big operators are becoming more active. One indication is the major tournaments being held in the region. The two best examples are the Asian Poker Tour (APT) and the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT). Both tours attract hundreds of players at each of their tournaments, which include stops in Macau and Manila among others. In fact, the Asian Poker Tour’s last Macau event attracted internationally renowned poker legends such as Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, and John Juanda, and had a guaranteed prize pool of $1.5 million.
Bigger and better poker tournaments are not the only signs of the rise of poker in Asia. The biggest sign may be the fact that Asian players are appearing in increasing numbers at all levels of poker and many of today’s emerging top poker pros are of Asian descent. The list includes John Phan, the top ranked player of 2008, as well as Men Nguyen, David Pham, JC Tran, Nam Le, and Quinn Do. The latter three have recently been appointed as Ambassadors to the Asian Poker Tour representing the tour at other major poker events around the world as well as a mandate to promote the game of poker throughout Asia.
At the Asian Poker Tour’s two events in 2008, there were poker players from over forty countries. However, ten of the players at the two final tables were Asian or of Asian descent and scores of other local players finished in the money.
Right now, it’s not a question of if, but when we will start to see poker players from Japan, Korea, the Philippines and China taking down the biggest titles and the biggest prize monies on the international poker circuit!

Steve Sung Confirms Participation in Asian Poker Tour’s Macau Event
Las Vegas, Nevada – With the biggest live tournament win of his poker career, Steve Sung is already looking forward to even more success.
The Poker Pack member confirmed his participation in this year’s Asian Poker Tour Macau 2009 event just hours after winning Event #4 at the 40th World Series of Poker®. Sung, a prominent figure in high-stakes online cash games, outlasted a field of 6,102 and dominated the final table to take first place in the $1,000 No Limit Hold ‘Em event, which was the biggest non-main-event tournament in history. He cemented his victory with pocket kings winning against pocket eights to pick up his first-ever WSOP® bracelet in addition to $771,106 in prize money.
Afterwards, the Korea-born pro talked about how excited he was to get the win. “I pick up my first bracelet in a field of over six thousand – what a great way to kick off the WSOP!” he said. “Hopefully I continue to run good all the way up to the Asian Poker Tour event in Macau, which will be the biggest tournament in Asia to date. I’ll be there with my buddies from The Poker Pack and it would be great if one of us wins it.”
The victory pushes Steve Sung’s career live tournament winnings to almost $3 million. His previous biggest payday was when he took second place at the 2008 Bay 101 Shooting Stars $9,600 No Limit Hold ‘Em Championship for $585,000 in winnings.

Smoking Aces – The Dramatic Rise of Poker in Asia
A game that has enthralled the West for years is beginning to make waves in the East. There’s no denying or stopping poker’s growing popularity and it is only a matter of time before the game reaches its status as a global game played by everyone from all corners of the world.
10 years ago, Poker in Asia was a virtually unknown commodity and you could not pick out a poker player from a crowd. Today, you would be hard pressed to find someone who does not play the game, or at the very least, does not know how it works.
While it was popular across America, specifically in California, and some parts of Europe, poker remained in the dark among Asian countries. For a long time, land based companies have expressed interest in pursuing the Asian market but have been largely unsuccessful in part because most of these countries, with the exception of Macau, banned any form of gambling. As a result, poker remained a Western game, completely detached from the East.
10 years later and it is a different story altogether.
It is no secret that poker's popularity experienced an unprecedented surge with the introduction of online poker. Not only that but broadcasts of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour introduced the game to millions of casual viewers.
But most importantly, poker’s introduction to Asia happened because the countries slowly began to open its collective arms to land based and on line gambling.
The allure of Asia as a poker crazy region comes as no surprise considering almost half of the world’s population can be found there. China and India alone comprise almost 2.5 billion people when combined and that is not even counting Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines, densely populated countries in their own right. With all these people starting to get familiarized with the game and the attraction that comes with it, it was only a matter of time before poker games and poker tournaments exploded in the region.
And now, to say that Texas Holdem, unquestionably the most popular type of poker, is being played everywhere is a vast understatement. Poker rooms are sprouting like full blown seeds all over Asia. Macau, a baccarat dominated country, is slowly beginning to experience the thrill that is poker. In recent years, it has hosted numerous poker tournaments including the Asian Poker Tour Macau 2008. Incidentally, the APT now has its very own poker room at the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino.
Even in the Philippines, poker is growing faster than you can say, “All In!” The country has hosted its fair share of tournaments not the least of which is the Asian Poker Tour. As a matter of fact, the success of last year’s APT tournament, which drew well over 316 poker players from all over the world, has resulted in the APT holding another tournament to kick off its 2009 season. The Asian Poker Tour Philippines 2009 held its first stop last January 27 to February 1, 2009 at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel and as expected, some of the best poker players from around the world participated in the event.
The Asian Poker Tour Macau is next and will be transformed into a record breaking 12 day extravaganza creating Asia’s first festival of poker. The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will run from August 12 to 23, 2009 at the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Macau. This is bigger and better with 12 days nonstop poker action. The poker festival will feature the largest range of side events ever seen in Asia, guaranteed to make the poker fest even more exciting and appealing to players at all levels.
Asian poker players have also become instrumental in the propagation of poker in Asia. Some of the best poker players in the world, including Johnny Chan, Men “The Master” Nguyen, JC Tran, Nam Le, Steve Sung, Quinn Do, David Rheem and Kwang Soo Lee all trace their roots in Asia and their impact in the world poker scene hasn’t gone unnoticed.
With the dramatic rise of poker in Asia, it only seems inevitable that more and more of the future top players of poker will come from the region. It is a testament to a game that only ten years ago was not even an afterthought. From the darkness of obscurity, poker has risen to become one of the most popular games in Asia.
With the way things are going, it is a safe bet that poker is far from reaching its peak popularity and that’s good news, not only for Asia, but for the entire world.

Leading Online Poker Rooms Flock to Support Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival
The Asian Poker Tour, Asia’s original poker tour, is delighted to announce that a number of leading online poker rooms have already signed up to provide online qualifiers for its popular Macau event. Last year’s six day event will be transformed into a record breaking 12 day extravaganza, creating Asia’s first festival of poker. The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will run from August 12–23, 2009 at the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino in Macau. The success of the Asian Poker Tour sponsored poker room at the Starworld has led organizers to lay out these ambitious plans that represent another huge leap forward for poker in the region.
Amongst the online poker rooms and networks already committed to sending players are the iPoker Network, Party Poker and Ongame Network, the third, fourth and fifth largest online poker networks respectively. In addition, online rooms Bwin, PKR, Dafa Poker, JBET Poker, Betfriends and 32Red will also be in on the action guaranteeing a significant online qualifier contingent. More online poker rooms are expected to sign up for the landmark event shortly.
Asian Poker Tour CEO Chris Parker said: “We are very encouraged by the enthusiasm of our partners to send players and we look forward to welcoming more online poker rooms on board. This year’s Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will be bigger and better with 12 days of non-stop poker action and fun. The Main Event has been extended, with the first of three day ones getting underway on August 19 and the televised final table scheduled for August 23. The Asian Poker Tour Macau Festival will feature a side event schedule never seen in Asia before, including several new formats that will stir the curiosity of poker enthusiasts at all levels.”
“We are currently witnessing record numbers in our Asian Poker Tour sponsored room at the Starworld and six figure $US pots are now a regular occurrence. We believe Asia is ready for its first festival of poker and that it will establish Macau as an essential stop on the international circuit.”
Last year, the event attracted some of the most famous names in the game including Doyle Brunson, Jack Binion, Johnny Chan, John Juanda, Huck Seed, Liz Lieu, Todd Brunson, Kenny Tran and Poker Pack members Nam Le, Quinn Do, JC Tran, Steve Sung, David “Chino” Rheem, and Kwang Soo Lee. The 2008 Asian Poker Tour Macau Main Event was won by 20-year-old US hotshot Yevgeniy Timoshenko, who scooped US$500,000 after emerging triumphant from the star-studded field that featured players from over 40 countries.
Organizers and leading tournament director Matt Savage, fresh from a successful revamp of the LA Poker Classic, promise a lengthy and varied side event schedule that will appeal to all tastes, details of which will be confirmed in the near future. The buy-in for the Main Event is set at US$4,300 (US$4000+$300) while high-limit games and sit-n-go tables will run throughout the duration of the festival. Last year’s event hosted a HK$1,000,000 (US$129,000) high rollers game and this will be repeated but with the Asian Poker Tour sponsored poker room at the Starworld now experiencing six figure $US pots regularly, the stakes are expected to be significantly higher this year! As well as the action on the felt, the play off the felt promises to be extremely lively too with The Asian Poker Tour looking to top the legendary and award winning party held in Macau last year.
